2022 GMC Canyon is a mid-size truck that requested a full overhaul. Unfortunately, 2022 Canyon will have to return to the market with only nominal changes.
This pickup, based on the Chevrolet Colorado, is positioned as an almost luxury option in a largely hardworking segment – and competition is rapidly increasing. The Canyon is capable and comfortable but lacks rear storage and the style that debuted in 2015 feels trite.
GMC made several changes to the 2021 Canyon, including an attractive grille for the Denali model and the introduction of an off-road AT4 trim.
One of the new features we look forward to for 2022 is the availability of Apple CarPlay wireless integration and Android Auto smartphones on multiple trims since GMC recently rolled out the technology in other models across its lineup. Beyond that, however, we hope 2022 Canyon will likely trudge unchanged.
2022 GMC Canyon Denali
The GMC Canyon will last for 2022 after this light refresh for the 2021 model year. The latest Canyon model, the off-road-oriented AT4, has sold well enough to warrant a return to the lineup. Introduced in 2015, the mid-sized Canyon appeals to pickup shoppers who are more interested in recreation than serious work assignments.
The 2022 GMC Canyon started with an Extended Cab for four and a 6-foot-2-inch bed that accommodates 49.9 cubic feet of cargo. The available Crew Cab offers four doors and room for five, along with a 5-foot-2-inch with 41.3 cubic feet of load space. A longer bed can be ordered in the Crew Cabin for maximum versatility inside and out.
Elevation Standard trim is more civilized than expected with power driver seats, 18-inch aluminum wheels, and a fully carpeted upholstered interior. Mid-level elevation provides additional conveniences such as remote starting, heated mirrors, and automatic climate control.
For buyers looking for adventure, the AT4 offers exclusive off-road suspension, a two-speed transfer case, auto-lock rear differential, and 31-inch tires. The luxurious Denali meets the luxury set with premium leather upholstery, open porous gray trim, and lots of chrome accents.
A 7-inch touch screen remains standard, but most models carry an 8-inch screen. Each trim comes with satellite radio and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The AT4 also gets HD radio and wireless device charging. Bose navigation and sound system exclusive to Denali.
2022 GMC Canyon Redesign
We expect the next third-generation GMC Canyon 2022 to launch in or after the 2023 model year. Until then, we expect the current second-generation Canyon to receive minor changes, updates, and upgrades.
- What: the all-new GMC Canyon midsize pickup truck that will represent the third generation of the nameplate, after the second-generation Canyon was introduced for the 2015 model year
- When: we expect the next-generation GMC Canyon to launch in calendar year 2022 as a model year 2023 kendaraan vehicle
- Why: The all-new Canyon will maintain GMC’s growing presence in the midsize pickup truck segment
- Where: sold in all current markets where Canyon is currently sold, specifically in North America (Canada, United States and Mexico)
2022 GMC Canyon AT4
The standard engine for the Elevation model is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder producing 200 horsepower and 191 lb-ft of torque. The optional 3.6-liter V6 delivers 308 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque.
The V6 is standard on the AT4 and Denali, and buyers can use the Duramax 2.8-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder with 181 hp and 268 lb-ft of torque. The V6 is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, while the four-cylinder engine is run with a six-speed automatic.
Models equipped with the base engine have a traction of up to 3,500 pounds. The V6 and turbodiesel can draw 7,000 and 7,700 pounds, respectively. Four-wheel drive is standard on the AT4 and optional anywhere in the lineup.
Nothing new in the security department for the 2022 GMC Canyon. Buyers have to make do with the basics: rear parking sensors, forward collision warnings and lane departure warnings. At least that’s standard in Denali.

GMC Canyon News 2022
Compact trucks are a hot segment, and more companies are fighting for a stock than ever before – including Chevy, Ford, Honda, Jeep and Nissan. But while some trucks are struggling and others are starting to show their age, it seems that GMC can’t keep up with the demand for their compact, 2022 GMC Canyon pickup.
Senior marketing manager for GMC trucks and full-size SUVs, Stuart Pierce, said that “demand exceeds supply … this is a segment where we don’t have enough capacity,” noted Pierce.
“We don’t have a large share of the segment there at the moment, but it’s very interesting, as this new competitor emerges, that the segment has grown but isn’t necessarily taking business away from us.”
“Our share of the segment fell as it got bigger,” noted Pierce, “but we can’t build (Canyons) anymore.” He also said that demand for Sierra was increasing among truck buyers. “Just like Sierras, we need more Sierras. It’s a good problem to have.”
Lest you forget, General Motors helped revive compact trucks to the US by introducing the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon in 2014. Since then, competitors such as the Tacoma and the modern Ranger, as well as the new Gladiator have followed suit.
But despite GMC touting enormous demand, the brand’s small footprint and production capabilities still place 2022 GMC Canyon at the very bottom of sales of compact trucks as a whole.
GMC only sold 32,826 Canyon pickups in 2019. Honda sold more than 33,000 Ridgeline units last year, and Jeep sold more than 40,000 Gladiators, although the Jeep wasn’t sold until May.
As for the brother of 2022 GMC Canyon Chevrolet, Colorado – the company sold more than 120,000 units in 2019. Thank you, Chevrolet has a much larger capacity.
To further entice buyers, the 2022 GMC Canyon AT4 debuted earlier this year with refined off-road meat.
New visual cues like gloss-black aluminum wheels, a performance exhaust, and a black AT4 badge give the compact truck a more rugged look, while a new skid plate, off-road rocker guard, and front leveling kit give the compact truck even more capabilities.
Sales of the large-sized Chevrolet Silverado may drop, but the mid-size Chevrolet Colorado is still relatively hot. General Motors’ bet on reintroducing mid-sized trucks to the market is sure to pay off.
A new report from Autoline says we still have time before the all-new surface of the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon.
Production of the next generation of mid-size trucks is expected to start in 2022, which means we probably won’t see a pickup for at least another four years.

Meanwhile, Colorado and Canyon will likely receive a broader mid-cycle update at some point to keep things fresh ahead of the potential introduction of 2022. It’s worth noting that Ford will reintroduce the Ranger mid-size pickup in the United States in 2019.
Ford may be able to steer current Colorado and Canyon owners with a new pickup if GM’s offering starts to look stale in comparison.
Of course, we won’t know more about GM’s next-generation mid-size trucks until the automakers want them. Meanwhile, Chevrolet and GMC will introduce the All-New Silverado 2019 and the 2019 Sierra possibly next year.
GMC Canyon Redesign 2022
We expect the next third-generation GMC Canyon to launch in or after the 2022 model year. Until then, we expect the current second-generation Canyon to receive minor changes, updates, and improvements.
We expect the upcoming 2022 GMC Canyon to be available as an intermediate pickup truck with the following cabin and bed configurations:
- Extended Cab, Long Box
- Crew Cabin, Short Box
- Crew Cabin, Long Box
2022 GMC Canyon Specs
2022 GMC Canyon is essentially a more glamorous version of the Chevy Colorado, although it is largely identical beneath the surface.
Although these mid-size pickup trucks are hugely popular, they now face greater competition from alternatives such as the Ford Ranger and the Jeep Gladiator.
Unlike other trucks in this class, GMC markets its mid-sizer as a premium pickup, although its top-of-the-line Denali model falls short of that expectation.
However, the 2022 GMC Canyon can be chrome plated and is equipped with luxury features, such as heated and cooled seats. It’s also available with a trio of engines that include a powerful V-6 and a torque-rich four-cylinder diesel.

Like Colorado, the 2022 GMC Canyon offers an extremely smooth ride and athletic handling for trucks that are not based on crossovers. This allows it to emulate full-size pickups – such as the GMC Sierra 1500 – with its outstanding towing and hauling capabilities.
GMC updated the 2022 GMC Canyon with a revised front-end design, a cooler Denali version, and a new AT4 model. The latter isn’t quite as sturdy as the jacked, wide-bodied Chevy Colorado ZR2, but it’s undoubtedly the most off-roading-ready Canyon it is.
Basically replacing the previous All Terrain trim levels, the AT4 uses 31-inch Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tires articulated via an exclusive suspension setup. It also features unique exterior and interior styling, slips plates for underbody protection, and an electronic limited-slip rear differential.
The Denali deluxe trim level receives 20-inch wheels, additional chrome body trim, and a more distinct grille. Likewise, now comes standard with heated steering wheel, heated and cooled front seats, and improved interior materials.
GMC Canyon 2022 Interior
The interior design of the 2022 GMC Canyon has high functionality and low flash. It features an upright instrument panel layout and controls that are easy to reach and read. Unfortunately, the center console is saddled with jumbo shifters.
Plastic toggle switches for accessory equipment in the center stack are very practical and easy to access but look cheap at more expensive trim levels like the Denali we tested.
That’s where our biggest gripe about the Canyon’s interior lies: even in the Denali trim, it never feels like a premium environment.
The front seats are very wide. However, the rear seats have limited legroom. An elevated rear seat position increases comfort, but three adults will be crushed on the long journey.
The 2022 GMC Canyon may not have much room to carry a suitcase into the cabin, but it has the most volume of cargo beds and significantly more room for smaller items than its competitors.
A deep center console tray, multiple door pockets, and miscellaneous storage throughout the cab provide protection for a wide variety of loose items. For items that take up a lot of space, there is a giant plastic trash can under the rear seat (crew cabin only).
The Canyon touchscreen infotainment system is attractive and intuitive, with standard features such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The screen is easy to use, with rubber knobs for volume and adjustment and redundant hard buttons for fast operation.
The SLE model and later have an 8.0-inch touchscreen with 4G LTE mobile hotspot. Denali has an exclusive wireless charging pad, and the premium Bose audio system is also standard.
GMC Canyon Engine 2022
We hope that the next powertrain from 2022 GMC Canyon includes a mix of current and built-in components:
Expected carry-over powertrain components:
- Naturally aspirated 3.6L V-6 LGZ petrol engine
- 2.8L I-4 LWN turbo-diesel engine
- 8-speed GM automatic transmission
Expected new powertrain components:
- The new undiscovered base engine
- 10-speed GM automatic transmission
While the new Canyon AT4 is an attractive off-roader that’s cheaper than the Colorado ZR2, it’s still not quite capable or desirable. Instead, we recommend the Elevation all-wheel-drive model, which comes standard with the available V-6 powertrain.
We also wanted a crew cabin body style, as the extended rear seats of the cab basically make it a two-seater. It comes standard with an 8.0-inch touch screen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspot. It also features automatic temperature control, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, damp rear doors, and remote starting.

We’ll be adding a High Elevation pack that includes a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, and leather seats. The Driver Alert package also adds a useful help feature,
From the 2022 GMC Canyon engine trio, we’ll steer you away from the base 2.5-liter four-cylinder. The taller model features a standard 308-hp 3.6 liters V-6 mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The V-6 not only has cylinder deactivation in an effort to save fuel, but it is also one of the fastest mid-size pickups we’ve tested.
The four-cylinder diesel engine sacrifices speed for fuel efficiency and towing capability. Indeed, the Canyon’s diesel engine was surprisingly polished; however, doing so would burden the buyer with some change.
The quality of the 2022 GMC Canyon ride does not exceed its class but manages to strike a balance between soft and firm damping. On bumpy and unpaved roads, it is very capable and will absorb most imperfections while turning off violence.
The AT4 model is supposed to enhance the pickup’s off-road capability even further with an upgraded suspension. At highway speeds, the Gorge is stable and relaxed.
Around the city, its smaller dimensions and agility require less driver attention in traffic and within strict limits. The rugged brake pedals provided responsive feedback in the 2022 GMC Canyon we tested.

2022 GMC Canyon Crew Cab
The 2022 GMC Canyon is perfect for those looking to get some of the features of a full-size pickup truck but in a mid-sized body. The mission begins with a rugged body-on-frame structure, extends to a high-power, high-torque V6 diesel and culminates in a maximum towing capacity of 7,700 lbs.
Those looking to go off-road will appreciate the AT4’s rugged interior trim with 31-inch wheels and unique off-road suspension. Available with an optional or dual cab and two berths, the Canyon is just as versatile as its Chevrolet Colorado counterpart.
But in our opinion the GMC version looks more elegant and mature. Expect to pay more for Denali’s lackluster interior and lack of technical support. However, Canyon 2022 will please anyone looking for a smaller, more affordable half-ton alternative. GMC Sierra.
While the Canyon AT4 is a cheaper all-terrain vehicle than the Colorado ZR2, it is far from being efficient or desirable. Instead, we recommend the Elevation model in combination with the optional V6 engine and all-wheel drive.
We also wanted a body style for the crew, as the extended rear seats essentially make it two-seater. It comes standard with an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspot. It also has automatic climate control, adjustable driver’s seat, tailgate shock absorbers and remote start.
We will be adding a Premium Upgrade Package which includes a heated steering wheel, heated front seats and leather seats. The Driver Alert package also adds useful assistive features such as lane departure alerts and rear parking sensors.
GMC Canyon MPG 2022
The EPA predicts a 2021 gas-powered four-cylinder 2022 GMC Canyon will get up to 19 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. Opting for the all-wheel-drive version will only lower the road rating by 1 mpg.
The V-6 engine paired with rear-wheel drive is expected to produce 18 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway; AWD drops these two numbers by 1 mpg each.
The government has yet to release a fuel economy rating for the diesel version of the 2022 GMC Canyon, but last year’s model had an estimated 20/30 mpg city / highway with RWD and 19/28 mpg city / highway with AWD.
On our 200-mile fuel-efficient route testing real-world results on the road, the diesel AWD delivers 28 mpg and the V-6 AWD version delivers 22 mpg.
