2022 GMC Sierra The GMC Sierra 1500 will likely head into a basically unchanged 2022 model year. The full-size pickup underwent a total redesign for 2019 and has received equipment updates since then, including a 10-speed automatic transmission, advanced trailering technology, and increased crane capacity for several engines.
The Sierra 1500 continues in three cabin styles, each with its own bed length. The three-seater Regular Cab, specially designed for work applications, is equipped with a 98-inch bunk. The Double Cab seats up to six people and gets a 79-inch crib. The popular Crew Cab offers a full-size rear door and a spacious rear, along with a 70-inch box.
The Sierra base reports for duty with minimum comfort, but plenty of utility for the money. The SLE and Elevation mid-level trims carry many popular types of equipment, including a heated front seat, power driver seat, remote start, and dual-zone automatic climate control. Moving up to the SLT added leather seats, the MultiPro configurable tailgate, and the GMC Trailering System’s program.
Off-road enthusiasts will appreciate the Sierra AT4 with standard four-wheel drive, lift suspension, two-speed transfer box, and muddy tires. The choice for luxury remains with Denali, which offers buyers premium leather and wood interiors, adaptive suspension, and a chrome-charged exterior with unique 22-inch wheels.
The Sierra starts with a 7-inch touchscreen, six speakers, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. 8-inch touch screen and standard satellite radio starting with SLE. Available connectivity enhancements include navigation, wireless device charging, wireless smartphone integration, and the Bose sound system. These features are standard in Denali.
No fewer than five engines are on the list for 2022. The base 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder can pull up to 9,600 pounds, an impressive feat for its size. A 4.3 liter V6 is offered on the base Sierra only. The 5.3-liter V8 flagship is available in all models and allows the Sierra to pull 11,500 pounds.
Most trims qualify for the 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbodiesel engine at 26 miles per gallon in a combination with propulsion. The top choice is a 6.2-liter V8 engine with 420 hp which increases the crane capacity to 13,300 pounds. Four-wheel drive is mandatory with 6.2 liters and optional with other engines.
The four-cylinder turbo comes with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and the V6 gets a six-speed automatic. Turbodiesel and 6.2 liters use a 10 speed automatic. The 5.3-liter V8 is paired with a six-speed automatic on the base Sierra and a 10-speed automatic on all other trims.
The Sierra 1500 is meant to be properly configured, so most driver assistance features are optional. Available technologies include lane assistance, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beam, and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection.
The Technology Package for the top trim comes with a head-up display, camera rearview mirror, bed view camera, and surround-view camera with integrated trailer length monitoring and jackknife alerts.

Last year’s and current models already look great, and the 2022 GMC Sierra is expected to take a step forward with a new look. The design will include new front and rear wheels, new wheels, and new paint colors. This is exciting news. but the best changes are in the interior.
The 2022 GMC Sierra is expected to offer a completely new interior, but will feature a stunning new design and new technology.
This upcoming update is said to include the following features: an optional larger sun/moonroof, a new dashboard design, a new center stack design that includes a larger screen, a new center console design, a new gauge cluster, and the option of a fully digital display, updated interior storage, and offered column shift stop.
Arguably better than a design update, the 2022 GMC Sierra is also said to offer the GM Super Cruise, which provides state-of-the-art semi-autonomous driving capabilities. Additionally, a unique windshield infotainment system, Google Android Automotive operating system, and more tweaks are expected to accompany the update. Whether it’s the overall design, the chrome-plated buttons, or the ability to pull in semi-autonomous mode, there’s a lot of interest inside with the 2022 GMC Sierra.
GMC Sierra News 2022
It’s no secret that the COVID-19 pandemic has caused numerous delays throughout the auto industry. GM truck enthusiasts feel the sting when some major upgrades for the Silverado and Sierra are pushed back from 2021 to 2022. But the wait is getting shorter – we get the first details about the new and redesigned features of this American classic.
We understand very well that GM Authority first reported General Motors planning to update its full-size half-ton truck – the Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 – for the 2022 model year. And now, we’re seeing the GMC Sierra 2022 for the first time thanks to a series of new spy photos that fresh.
The prototype model seen here wears ample camouflage on the front which completely obscures the changes underneath. However, the exterior design updates will pale when compared to what is available for the interior, as well as the various in-vehicle technologies.
Last summer, MC&T first reported that General Motors was working on a major upgrade to its current-generation Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks.
The most significant update among them is their overhaul of the interior, which will integrate some of the hardware from their full-size SUV cousins, the Chevrolet Tahoe, and the GMC Sierra. This plan was originally intended for the 2021 Silverado and 2021 Sierra trucks.
However, as the COVID-19 pandemic hit the auto industry, this increase has been pushed back by a year. In turn, the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 will see this interior revision.
As per the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 2021 ordering guidelines, the two T1 Platform trucks will be largely unchanged from before, except for a few packages and a few changes here and there.
It has long been speculated, no, expected, that the Chevrolet Silverado will eventually get the MultiPro 5-way adjustable tailgate found on the 2020 GMC Sierra SLT and Denali trim levels. Its function completely changed the scope of truck body use, and as a result, Ford and Ram considered countermeasures.
The Chevrolet Silverado 2022 will finally see this tailgate too, but with different branding. According to the folks at GM-Trucks, Silverado will receive the so-called “Multi-Flex” branded rear door, which is just right.
More details are sure to follow, so be sure to follow MC&T for all the details, and sign up for our daily newsletter today.
2022 GMC Sierra Redesign
This update will especially be the biggest change customers can see and touch. The original interiors for the T1 Silverado and Sierra have so far received a bit of fanfare, especially as critics have called out and ahead over what Ram is doing with the cabin of his trucks.
The Ford F-150 2021 is also engaged in interior design in terms of functionality. Examples include a fully reclining front seat and a retractable gear selector that creates a flat surface for laptops and tablets.
While this content isn’t exactly expected in the Chevrolet Silverado 2022 and GMC Sierra 2022, there will at least be a bigger touchscreen, and perhaps a sliding center console. A little help.
As tuners start looking for ways to work with 2019-2021 Silverado and Sierra cybersecurity, GM will be slamming its doors. This is due to the application of the Global B electrical architecture currently found on the Corvette C8.
We originally reported on the seemingly impenetrable cybersecurity measures that kept the 2020 Corvette Stingray ECU under lock and key over a year ago.

And sadly, we are still right. But that hasn’t stopped vain social media influencers from trying, leading to devastating results. But they gained more followers as a result, which they only pursued in the first place.
The Global B electrical architecture is also present in all of GM’s T1 full-size SUV products launched now, and the same is true for the Cadillac CT4 and CT5, plus their upcoming Blackwing variants.
The main stylistic feature that makes us believe this is the Sierra is the folding design on the front door. In this test mule, this line extends from under the mirror and rises as it moves backward, as in the Sierra.
In contrast, the Silverado folds more clearly and flows in the opposite direction. The camo shape covering the taillight cluster also follows the Sierra headlight more closely than the Silverado.
The reviewer, who later acknowledged this was likely the Sierra, pointed out the new grille and new bedside steps for what looked like a Double Cab body style. Hopefully, these useful features make their way into the updated Sierra and Silverado.
No spy photos were taken of the interior, although we hope GM will improve the cabin, as the Silverado and Sierra are not in the leading position in this regard.
GMC Sierra Spyshot 2022
Overall, GM’s current full-size twin trucks, the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, are good trucks that in many ways compete with the sales-leading Ford F-150 and the new Ram 1500 which regularly nibbles the back of Bowtied trucks.
Considering the cash flow generated by the segment, it’s no surprise to see a new version of the GMC Sierra test with some light camouflage that hides some improved bits and pieces.
We’ll cover what we can see in a moment, but first, we’ll show what we can’t see in this photo of the eyes. What the GM partner needs is a competitive interior.
The Silverado and Sierra are currently limited by a dashboard, door panels, and instrument family that doesn’t quite compare to their Ram and Ford competitors.
We’ve spoken to a few designers from GM, and they’re well aware of the criticism that’s been imposed on their duo of full-size trucks, so we’d be surprised if there weren’t any highly revised interiors lurking for the trucks. ‘next refresh.
Hopefully, future eye-eye photo sets will give us a better view of what’s inside because from afar, the windshield display doesn’t give us much information.
Will Sierra share the interior with the redesigned Yukon? We’ll just have to wait and see, but suffice it to say that any fix will be welcome.
2022 GMC Sierra Interior
Inside, the GMC Sierra 2022 is expected to feature a revised cockpit, complete with a center stack similar to the one on the 2021 GMC Yukon.
That will include a revised infotainment system cluster running the same general software as the current Sierra 1500 models, 2019, 2020, and 2021, albeit presented on different and potentially larger screens.
What’s more, expect a range of upgrades in the gauge cluster department, with the fully digital gauge cluster or the larger Driver Information Center, displays being offered.

Additionally, GM’s semi-autonomous Super Cruise system will eventually make its way to the GMC Sierra 2022, enabling hands-free driving on the road.
The GMC Sierra 2022 will have a suitable job for that, as it goes up against the well-received Ram 1500 as well as the all-new Ford F-150 2021.
Similar updates are expected for Sierra’s corporate cousin and T1 platform partner, the Chevrolet Silverado.
2022 GMC Sierra Exterior
Moving on to the exterior, we can see that the checkered and angular look of the current Sierra will continue through this refresh.
A small glance through the thick tarp covering the front of the truck shows a black plastic grille, but we’re sure there’s a lot of chrome lurking under there too.
We wondered if that opening allowed cameras or radar to peek at it, but rumors suggest GM’s revered Super Cruise could be on the menu in the next few years.
2022 GMC Sierra Engine
We don’t know what’s under the hood of this test truck, but we don’t imagine there will be many changes to the current full list of truck powertrain options.
We expect the 3.0-liter six-cylinder Duramax diesel engine to get the cooling it needs to raise its crane rating to match its class-leading efficiency, as it is arguably America’s best light-duty diesel offering.
We know that the automaker is also working on electric powertrains, but we hope to see their debut in the Hummer-branded truck that will go on sale at GMC dealerships for the first time.
We look forward to what we think will be a swift burst of spy photos as this truck continues its tests.

Despite criticism of the interiors of the all-new models unveiled for the 2019 calendar year, the GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado are selling well.
Sierra sales rose 10 percent to 106,833 units during the first six months of the calendar year 2020, while Silverado sales have increased 4 percent to 267,166 units during the same period.
And based on the previous update schedule, expect Silverado HD and Sierra HD to get this upgrade for the 2023 model year. But for the exact price we don’t have accurate information yet, we will continue to update the latest information on this website.
