2023 GMC Canyon for 2022, GM is offering a pair of midsize pickup trucks, the Chevrolet Colorado and the GMC Canyon.
The two tracks share a similar body style, drive train options, and technology package as the company’s steady companions.
GM offers expanded cab and crew cab versions of both pickup trucks with a mix of available long and short bed options.
Comparable models carry the same price tag, but generally speaking, the GMC Canyon is slightly more expensive than the Chevy Colorado.
The base Colorado WT trim with two-wheel drive, extended cab, and the long bed starts at around $26,930 on Chevrolet’s online comparison tool. The same base trim features GMC Canyon Elevation starting at around $28,295 using the GMC comparison tool.
Both trucks have a 2.5-liter all-aluminum four-cylinder petrol engine that produces 200 horsepower and 191 lb-ft of torque in the base trim.
The higher trim levels give the choice between a 3.6-liter 308-hp petrol-powered V6 engine producing 275 lb-ft of torque and a 2.8-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder that produces 181 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque.
Depending on the engine equipped and trim level, there is a choice between six-speed and eight-speed automatic transmissions.
The four-wheel drive version comes with a two-speed transfer case which allows for lower gearshifts in offroad situations. Additionally, an auto-locking rear differential is available to provide traction to both rear wheels in slippery conditions.
Other Fast Lane Truck speculations include the return of the Denali trim.
There is also an elevated section of the hood which gives the appearance of a non-functional air intake system that can support the intake of the 2.7-liter turbocharged I4 engine.
2023 GMC Canyon Review
The current second-generation GMC Canyon has been on sale since 2015. While pickup trucks tend to run several years without updates, the new competition means that GMC is gearing up to roll out an updated model for the new year.
The 2023 GMC Canyon will arrive as a completely redesigned midsize pickup truck. The addition of the AT4X off-road performance trim is rumored to be coming, but it’s uncertain if it will be for the 2023 or 2024 model years.
On the outside, the 2023 Canyon is expected to get a larger, but more angular design, which will deviate from the current model’s chunky styling. From the spy photos we saw of the prototype, the bumper clearance has been increased, signaling an off-road goal.
Canyon’s upcoming headlights will be much slimmer than those on the current model and placed higher on the front fascia. The fog lamps are expected to grow in size and be placed closer to the headlights.
Beyond that, the prototype truck that GMC has tested has been heavily disguised.
We expect the overall design to deviate from the Chevy Colorado look and start sharing more elements with the recently redesigned GMC Sierra 1500.
The interior of the upcoming Canyon is expected to be very different from the current pickup trucks on sale. Instead of a thick dashboard with a prominent infotainment system, the truck will likely have a more modern system with the infotainment system sitting above the dashboard, and a row of thin buttons just below the screen for the HVAC system.
Overall, we expect the 2023 GMC Canyon to have a more luxurious and technologically advanced design than the trucks currently on sale.
On the tech front, the 2023 Canyon is expected to arrive with much more advanced features than the current model.
Canyon currently comes standard with a seven-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, two USB ports, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, six audio speakers, and satellite radio. An eight-inch touchscreen, Wi-Fi hot spot, wireless charging pad, seven audio speakers, and two additional USB ports are available.
GMC has yet to confirm what engines will be available with the upcoming Canyon. We expect the pickup to be offered with multiple powertrains, although GMC could move to offer a turbocharged engine as diesel becomes increasingly unpopular.
The pickup is currently available with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder, a 3.6-liter V6, and a 2.8-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder. Output ranges from 181 horsepower with the diesel to 308 hp with the V6.
A six-speed automatic transmission is standard and an eight-speed automatic is available with the V6 engine. The Canyon is equipped with rear-wheel drive and is available with four-wheel drive.
Canyon currently maxes out at a towing capacity of 7,700 pounds, which is tied for best in class and can carry up to 1,580 pounds.
GMC currently lacks many standard safety features. The Rearview Camera and Teen Driver system are standard. Available safety features include lane departure warning, forward collision warning, and rear parking sensors.
We expect the 2023 GMC Canyon to be available with a range of advanced safety features.

2023 Canyon Denali Design
Canyon came out arguably quite handsome if a bit underwhelming, in visual stakes. For 2023, GMC has injected utility with a rugged new attitude that aims to beat Tacoma in terms of sheer aesthetic appeal.
The 2023 GMC Canyon frontal style features an egg crate grille flanked by a pair of two-level headlights. The sleek upper unit includes the DRL and turn signal, while the lower unit provides the main light source.
Thick, square fenders and chiseled sheet metal dominate the side profile – although, it must be said, the Cab area looks almost identical to today’s trucks.
The view from the rear matches the solid, monolithic front; here, the truck features a competitively sized bed box, LED tail lights, and a firmly pressed back door.
One area that trucks desperately need right now is in the cab. Thankfully, it appears that GMC has ditched the kitchen sink to right the wrongs of the past with a completely modern and future-proof interior that will borrow heavily from the latest Sierra 1500.
Key highlights include a digital instrument cluster and a horizontal infotainment system that can run Apple CarPlay and integrate Google features like maps simultaneously.
Touchscreen critics can breathe a sigh of relief as the new truck has several physical buttons and knobs for the HVAC system positioned below the infotainment screen.
The right power/volume knob is also in the upper left corner of the interface. Elsewhere, Canyon will feature upgraded materials, passenger space, and a myriad of semi-autonomous driver assistance.
2023 GMC Canyon Denali Engine
The Canyon Denali 2023 Engine underlying the new Canyon (and forthcoming Colorado) will be a heavily revised version of GM’s GMT32XX platform. It will also feature a new version of GM’s electrical architecture to allow for over-the-air updates and other remote connectivity services.
While we don’t have official confirmation on which powertrain will be offered, there is a strong belief that GM’s highly advanced 2.7-liter 2.7-liter inline-four turbo unit will be used as the sole form of propulsion.
On the larger-than-life Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 twins, this unit is paired with a GM 10-speed automatic, pumping out 310 hp and 430 pound-feet of torque.
That’s more power not only over the current 2.5-liter four-pot, but even the 308 hp and 275 lb-ft (373 Nm) of the 3.6-liter V6.
2023 GMC Canyon Redesign
We expect the 2023 GMC Canyon to receive a complete overhaul (redesign and reengineering), introducing the third generation of the Canyon nameplate.
Expected Changes, Updates, New Features
Here are the changes we expect for the 2023 GMC Canyon Denali Redesign:
- Completely new exterior
- New interior
- Highly revised platform (though not all new)
- New powertrain lineup
- New active safety features, including Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Zone Alert, etc.
We expect the 2023 GMC Canyon to be offered as a midsize pickup truck with the following cab and berth configurations:
- Extended Cab, Long Box
- Crew Cab, Short Box
- Crew Cab Long Box
We expect the 2023 Canyon to be offered the following trim levels:
- Elevation/Elevation Standard
- AT4
- Denali
2023 GMC Canyon Powertrain
We expect the 2023 GMC Canyon to offer only one engine option – the GM 2.7L L3B turbocharged four-cylinder engine with TriPower technology.
In the Sierra 1500, the engine produces 310 horsepower (231 kW) @ 5600 RPM and 348 pound-feet (471 Nm) @ 1500 rpm of torque. A 10-speed automatic transmission will be the only power option.
In this regard, 2023 Canyon is expected to no longer offer the option of a Duramax turbo-diesel engine and a choice of a six-cylinder engine.
For comparison, the second-generation Canyon is offered with three engine options:
- Transmission Engine Horsepower @ Torque RPM @ Rear axle RPM
- 2.5L I-4 LCV petrol MYB automatic 6 speed 200 @ 6300 191 @ 4400 4.10
- 3.6L V-6 LGZ petrol M5T 8-speed automatic 308 @ 6800 275 @ 4000 3.42
- 2.8L I-4 LWN diesel MYB automatic 6 speed 181 @ 3400 369 @ 2000 3.42

With a full redesign, the upcoming Canyon is expected to have a higher starting price than the pickups currently on sale. Prices for Canyon start at $27,995 (with a destination) and go up to $50,145.
2023 GMC Canyon Denali Release Date
2023 GMC Canyon Release Date, 2023 GMC Canyon will continue to be assembled at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri by GM USA. It will be the only factory in the world to produce the model.
We expect the 2023 Canyon Release Date to launch in the second half of the calendar year 2022. Debuts in the first half of the calendar year 2022 are likely.
***
The interesting thing is that the current generation GMC Canyon mid-size pickup truck has been around since 2015. But in a highly competitive truck market, this truck can’t keep up without updates. As such, it will receive a complete overhaul for the 2023 model year.
As far as we know, it will still use the current GMT-31XX chassis, but with many revised updates. The new chassis will also support Canyon’s subsidiary truck, the 2023 Chevrolet Colorado.
In terms of engines and transmissions, the new GMC Canyon will no longer be available with 3 engine options as it is today. The 2.5L and 3.6L petrol engines will be replaced by the 2.7L turbocharged 4-cylinder engines found in the current GMC Sierra 1500 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 light pickups. This engine develops 310 hp. and a torque of 348 Nm.
If the power and torque figures remain the same as the light truck, it will be the most powerful engine in the Canyon with 2 HP. and 73 lb-ft more than the current 3.6-liter V6 engine. The 2.7L engine is mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission and will likely continue to work with that transmission for the 2023 GMC Canyon.
Unfortunately, the “baby” 2.8-liter Duramax diesel engine is no longer available in the new generation GMC Canyon. It is unknown why Duramax will not be offered, but some speculate that it is due to the closure of the Rayong, Thailand plant where the machine is made.
It also makes sense to discontinue production if indeed the 2.7-liter engine is the only powerplant. The new engine has nearly the same torque but is more fuel-efficient than the 3.6-liter V6.
Of course, the new GMC Canyon will undergo interior and exterior design changes using many of the latest infotainment and comfort features found in other GM trucks.
Pictured is the off-road version of the new Canyon; AT4. However, unlike the current Canyon AT4, the new AT4 is likely to be closer in performance to the current Colorado ZR2.
From spy shots, the New Canyon AT4 shows very prominent fender flares as well as the more aggressive Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires. We can also see that this Canyon prototype lacks side steps and a spoiler to improve aerodynamics and fuel efficiency, which suggests that this is indeed a more aggressive version of the AT4.
2023 GMC Canyon Preview
Just last month, GM Authority unveiled the first spy shots of the new generation, Chevy Colorado. Like the prototype in Colorado, the Canyon featured here is a Crew Cab, Short Box model. The model shown here is also similar to the Canyon Denali, judging by the 20-inch chrome wheels and chrome footrest.
Interestingly, the front panel of the GMC Canyon 2023 prototype has a rather steep slope. This means that the truck loses various trim levels or is not a Denali, but instead comes equipped with the off-road-oriented Canyon AT4.
That said, the low-slung footrest doesn’t scream like an SUV, although the Bridgestone Dueler A / T tires on the prototype are stiffer than the Denali needs. The 2023 GMC Canyon Denali may simply wear factory off-road-oriented tires.
The front end of this prototype also has a different headlight arrangement compared to the 2023 Colorado.
While Chevy has high-placed horizontally oriented headlights to match the usual setup seen on the Chevy Silverado, this 2023 GMC Canyon prototype has a signature LED at the top with a vertically oriented light source running across the front fascia.
The handling seems to be compatible with the updated GMC Sierra HD 2023 prototype we saw earlier.
Even though the prototype was wearing a bit of vinyl camouflage, we can still see the 2023 Canyon will have a more aggressive body finish than the current model. For example, the fender flares look bolder, the sheet metal work on the doors is more sophisticated, and the dashboard has a rather chunky, upright look.
Camouflage covers most of the box, which is also fitted with a spare set of taillights. The single-outlet exhaust can be seen on the passenger side of the truck and we can barely see what the CornerStep’s rear bumper looks like.
The 2023 GMC Canyon will use an updated version of GM’s current GMT-31XX body-on-frame architecture, which will be dubbed the 31XX-2. The vehicle will get an all-new exterior and interior, along with an all-new powerplant in the form of the 2.7L I-4 L3B turbocharged petrol engine currently offered in the Sierra 1500.
The amplified four-pot is rated at a healthy 310 horsepower and 348 pound-feet of torque in that application. GM’s 10-speed automatic transmission will take care of shifting tasks. The current models 2.5L I-4 LCV and 3.6L V-6 LGZ, along with the 2.8L I-4 LWN turbo-diesel baby Duramax will not be offered.
The GMC midsize pickup truck will also adopt GM’s new Global B electrical architecture – otherwise known as the Vehicle Intelligence Platform, or VIP.
In addition to enabling over-the-air (OTA) updates to all vehicle systems, Global B also enables the latest infotainment and active safety technologies.
The canyon is currently consistently at the bottom of its segment from a raw sales volume point of view, although that is more a factor of limited production capacity and higher prices than the segment average.
2023 GMC Canyon Redesign
It looks like GMC is testing a redesigned 2023 Canyon pickup with an updated suspension borrowed from the ZR2 variant of its Colorado twin. This heavily disguised prototype is packaged in a DSSV Multimatic damper disguised in black vinyl.
Rumors have pointed to a GMC Colorado ZR2 variant ever since the midsize pickup adopted the AT4 branding for its off-road variant. GM seems poised to accept the formula for GMC’s more luxurious pickups like the Silverado.
The latter, now officially confirmed, was spotted on the street with its DSSV surprise disguised just like here.
The prototype goes high – even for the AT4 – and uses the outstanding Goodyear Wrangler range of all-terrain tires. We can say this is a Canyon more than any other Colorado, thanks to the GMC-style fog lamp design, which differs from the Colorado prototypes we’ve seen in testing.
Like Colorado, the refreshed Canyon will be offered with just one engine: a 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, borrowed from the Silverado and Sierra pickups.
Expect Canyon to debut alongside its Chevy twin in about a year or two as a 2023 or 2024 model.
2023 GMC Denali Canyon
We envision the upcoming 2023 GMC Canyon Denali to be the new model year of the next-generation pickup truck, with a new generation slated to arrive in the 2023 model year. However, before his departure.
The 2023 GMC Canyon Denali is offering customers a bit of personal style with the new Denali Black Edition package, as shown here in the next GM Authority photo gallery.
Essentially, the 2023 GMC Canyon Denali Black Edition package replaces some of the Denali chrome trims with new black components, giving the midsize pickup a fresh look.
We don’t know for sure what code will be passed on to this new generation. However, the Denali Black Edition package is only available in combination with body-colored onyx black (RPO GBA) and Jet Black (RPO H2X) seats. The set debuted on social media a few days ago and we are now taking a close look at what it has to offer.
First, last year’s GMC Canyon Denali 2022 Black Edition package includes a set of 20-inch low-gloss black aluminum wheels (RPO RZO) with a five-spoke design complementing the Onyx Black paint job.
The side view also shows a set of black 5 “Rectangular Upright Pegs (RPO RVS), which replace the 5” chrome sub-footpegs (RPO E15) found on standard pickup trucks.
In addition, last year’s 2022 GMC Canyon Denali Black Edition package also features a GMC Black Chrome (RPO VTA) exhaust tip that replaces the standard polished exhaust tip (RPO VQZ). It’s a small detail, but it looks good when you look at it.
Further improvements were found inside the cockpit, where we find All-Weather Floor Liners (RPO AAK).
Please note that the GMC Canyon Denali Black Edition is not available with the Power Pack (RPO PDG), Cat-Back Performance Exhaust System (RPO WBC), All-Weather Floor Mat (RPO VAV), and All-Weather Flooring. (RPO RIA).
At the moment, no pricing for the package is available as the 2023 GMC Canyon Denali standard price is also not available. However, for reference, the 2021 GMC Canyon Denali 2WD Cab / Short Box Cab / Short Box starts at $ 43,890.
2023 GMC Canyon AT4X
GMC unveiled the Canyon AT4 off-road trim last January and the product quickly became popular. In November 2020, the automaker added a dedicated off-road version to further improve the car’s market performance, and it looks like GMC may be working on an even more hardcore Canyon model.
MuscleCarsAndTrucks claims GMC is preparing the 2023 Canyon AT4X to go above the 2023 GMC Canyon AT4 trim level. According to the information, frankly, we take it with a grain of salt at this early stage – it will be a mechanical counterpart to the upcoming Chevrolet Silverado ZR2. This means some improvements in performance and suspension over a conventional truck.
The most impressive figure included in the MCT report appears to be the 33-inch Goodyear tires, which will be equipped with Multimatic DSSV dampers and larger wheel arches. Additionally, the better approach and departure angles should deliver more impressive off-road performance.
What will be below? Our sources claim a turbocharged version of the L3B’s 2.7-liter engine will power the new Canyon AT4X producing a peak output of around 325 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque. No V6 diesel options are reportedly planned for now.
In general, the range of the Canyon AT4X – like the upcoming Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 – will be very limited. Customers will be able to choose only one body style (crew cab) and one engine option.
Add to this the single transmission option and the fact that these two performance trucks will be very limited in terms of aftermarket tuning opportunities thanks to the encrypted nature of the GM Global B electrical architecture.

2023 GMC Canyon AT4 Towing Capability
In the coming 2023, GMC Canyon intends to carry out a complete refurbishment of the pickup’s nameplate, initiating a new third generation. So far, GM Authority has captured prototypes of the 2023 GMC Canyon Denali and the 2023 GMC Canyon AT4, and we are now placing the two prototypes side by side for comparison.
The Denali trim level is the best in the Canyon lineup, while the AT4 is tuned as an off-road trim for readers who may not be aware of this. Thus, the 2023 GMC Canyon Denali is equipped with 20-inch chrome rims, while the 2023 GMC Canyon AT4 uses a set of 20-inch silver alloy wheels with black accents.
Tire specifications also vary greatly as the AT4 prototype is fitted with Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires, the same tires used on the Chevy Silverado ZR2 Trail Boss prototype, while the Denali has the less aggressive Bridgestone Dueller A / T tires.
However, it’s worth noting that the Dueler A / T Denali tires are rougher than required for the top trim, but the 2023 GMC Canyon Denali may ship with these larger raiders in the future.
The footrest is also an important starting point between the two prototypes: the Denali prototype has a chrome footrest that can be hung low, and the AT4 prototype has no footrest at all. That makes sense given the AT4’s emphasis on ground clearance, although the SUV trim is also expected to offer a set of tight-fitting footpegs as an option.
Interestingly, the front panels of both prototypes are surprisingly similar. Both have tall upright pillars, a high tilt angle, and a large clearance, which could indicate that the Denali prototype is missing a few front-end elements or that the Denali will receive a new dashboard.
Additional details include noticeable fender flares and aggressive body surface development compared to the current GMC Canyon. At the rear, both models have taillights and a single-exit exhaust with a beveled edge for the latter.
The new GMC Canyon 2023 will be launched on an updated version of the GMT-31XX frame platform, dubbed 31XX-2. The interior will also be redesigned, and engine options will be limited to an all-new 2.7L I4 L3B turbocharged petrol engine.
Located under the hood of a GMC Sierra 1500, this engine has 310 horsepower and 348 lb-ft of torque. The current naturally aspirated 3.6L V6 LGZ and 2.5L I4 LCV gas engines, as well as the 2.8L I4 LWN junior Duramax turbodiesel, will not be offered.
2023 GMC Canyon AT4X Price
GMC Canyon AT 2023 The new pickup is also expected to be equipped with the latest GM Global B electrical architecture, offering the latest technology features and over-the-air (OTA) software updates.
Production will take place at GM’s Wentzville plant in Missouri, with sales in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The next-generation pickup could also be sold in the Middle East.
With prices yet to be determined, odds are expected to start at around $ 29,000 and rise to around $ 47,000.
2023 GMC Canyon Changes
We expect the 2023 GMC Canyon to receive a complete refurbishment (redesign and reengineering) that will feature the third generation of the Canyon nameplate.
Expected changes, updates, and new features – these are the changes that we expect from Canyon 2023:
- Brand new exterior
- Brand new interior
- A heavily revised platform (though not entirely new). New active safety features include adaptive cruise control, blind-spot alerts, and more.
We expect the 2023 GMC Canyon to be offered as a midsize pickup truck with the following cab and berth configurations:
- Extended Cab, Long Box
- Crew Cabin, Short Box
- Crew Cabin Long Box Kotak
We expect the 2023 GMC Canyon to offer only one engine option – the GM 2.7L L3B turbocharged four-cylinder engine with TriPower technology. In the Sierra 1500, the engine makes 310 horsepower (231 kW) @ 5600 RPM and 348 pound-feet (471 Nm) @ 1500 rpm of torque. A 10-speed automatic transmission will be the only power option.
In this regard, 2023 Canyon is expected to no longer offer the option of a Duramax turbo-diesel engine and a choice of a six-cylinder engine. The third-generation Canyon will use an updated version of the same GMT 31XX platform used by the second-generation model. The updated architecture will be known as 31XX-2 internally at GM. It will be shared with Chevy Colorado 2023 and later.
Before November 2018, GM plans to develop a new platform called the 32XX for the third-generation Canyon (and Colorado). That architecture will also support GM’s proposed Jeep Wrangler fighter jet.
However, the competitor Wrangler was canceled as part of GM’s ongoing restructuring and cost optimization efforts.

2023 Canyon Interior
Earlier this week, GM Authority unveiled the first spy shots of the upcoming 2023 GMC Canyon, one of which shows the interior.
While sub-optimal photo angles are combined with interior camouflage to (presumably) prevent us from getting a good view of the mid-range pickup’s updated interior, we still got a good feel for the center console.
Two elements stand out from the rest: the conspicuous chrome volume knob sits closer to the driver’s side than the center console, and what appears to be a reasonably sized center screen that extends towards the front passenger side.
Those who follow the latest GM news here at GM Authority may notice that these two elements bear striking similarities to those seen in Canyon’s big brother, the upcoming 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali, which we saw earlier in May.
Looking at the nearby spy shots, it appears that both GMC trucks will have the same chrome volume buttons along with a relatively large horizontally oriented infotainment screen.
Recall that the GMC Sierra 1500 will receive a long-awaited update for the 2023 model year, in which the full-size pickup will receive a new cab, an updated look, and updates to the powertrain line.
Plus, the Sierra Denali will likely have a unique mid-stack over the rest of the lineup.
GMC Canyon will be overhauled for the 2023 model year after the current second-generation model has an eight-year life cycle. The updated truck will be equipped with an updated version of the current GM GMT-31XX body-on-frame structure, dubbed 31XX-2.
2023 Canyon Exterior
Specifically, the 2023 GMC Canyon will receive an all-new exterior and interior, as well as an all-new powerplant in the form of the 2.7L I-4 L3B turbocharged gasoline engine currently offered in the Sierra 1500.
The four-pack engine is rated at 310 horsepower and 348 lb-ft of torque. GM’s 10-speed automatic transmission takes care of the gear changes. The current 2.5L I-4 LCV and 3.6L V-6 LGZ models, along with the 2.8L I-4 LWN baby Duramax turbo-diesel, will not be offered.
In addition, GMC Canyon 2023 is expected to adopt GM Global B’s new electrical architecture, also known as the Vehicle Intelligence platform or VIP. In addition to over-the-air (OTA) update capability for all vehicle systems, Global B also supports the latest infotainment and active safety technologies.
The 2023 GMC Canyon will be built at GM’s Wentzville plant in Missouri alongside its corporate cousin, the 2023 Chevy Colorado. GM has invested $ 1 billion in a special workshop for a new midsize pickup truck.
2023 GMC Canyon Release Date
2023 The GMC Canyon will continue to be built at GM’s Wentzville plant in Missouri alongside its corporate cousin, the 2023 Chevy Colorado. GM is investing $1 billion into a dedicated facility for the new midsize pickup.
The 2023 GMC Canyon will continue to be sold in three North American countries namely the United States, Canada, and Mexico. It’s also possible that the next-generation model will make its way into the Middle East – the only remaining market outside of North America where GMC does business.
We expect 2023 GMC Canyon to launch in the second half of the calendar year 2022. Debuts in the first half of the calendar year 2022 are likely.
