2025 GMC Sierra Review

During a recent GM Investor Event, General Motors President Mark Reuss discussed the automaker’s efforts to increase efficiency and lower greenhouse gas emissions with its next-generation pickup. “This will include a new powertrain with major improvements and efficiency, as well as performance,” said Reuss. “The next engine portfolio update on our next-generation full-size trucks will result in a better than 10 percent greenhouse gas reduction compared to today’s offering.”

Aside from the updated powertrain offering, the 2025 GMC Sierra will also flaunt an entirely new design for the exterior and interior, as well as take on an all-new platform.

While an electrified GMC Sierra pickup is likely in the automaker’s future lineup, the next-gen Sierra won’t use the same platform used by the GMC Hummer EV SUV and Hummer EV Pickup, which use the Ultium Platform, meaning they use GM’s Ultium battery. technology and Ultium drive technology.

The Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, and Hummer EV have been generating a lot of excitement, leading many to believe that the current Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 trucks would be the last GM half-ton pickups with combustion engines.

However, that assumption is incorrect. General Motors President Mark Reuss clarified during the company’s Investor Day that they are not done with selling conventional pickup trucks, even as they focus on electric vehicles, autonomous technology, and advanced software. The plan is to release the next-generation Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 by 2025.

Reuss mentioned an “engine portfolio update” for the upcoming family of GM trucks and stated that the next-generation models would feature new powertrains with significant improvements in efficiency and performance. He also emphasized that these updates would result in a more than 10 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to the current offerings.

To put this into perspective, the 10 percent reduction figure is a combination of the 5.8 percent reduction achieved in the 2022 mid-cycle update for the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500, as well as the expected additional 4.7 percent reduction in the next-generation trucks arriving in 2025.

The exact details of the “engine portfolio update” remain unclear, as different techniques are being employed across the industry to reduce tailpipe emissions. Ford, one of GM’s main truck competitors, introduced the F-150 hybrid (known as PowerBoost), while Stellantis offers a 48V mild hybrid setup called eTorque in the Ram 1500.

Will GM choose to hybridize its best-selling trucks for 2025, or are they working on something more advanced? It’s too early to say, but for the latest news on the next-generation Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, stay tuned to MC&T.

Next Generation GMC Sierra

The forthcoming 2025 GMC Sierra represents the next generation of full-size pickup trucks. One significant aspect of the next-gen trucks will be the introduction of new and improved powertrains. General Motors President Mark Reuss discussed the company’s commitment to enhancing efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the upcoming trucks during a recent GM Investor Event.

Reuss emphasized that the next-generation full-size trucks would feature new powertrains that offer substantial improvements in efficiency and performance. He stated that the engine portfolio update for these trucks is expected to achieve a greenhouse gas reduction of more than 10 percent compared to the current offerings.

In addition to the updated powertrains, the 2025 GMC Sierra will showcase completely redesigned exteriors and interiors. It will also be built on an entirely new platform, different from the one used by the GMC Hummer EV SUV and Hummer EV Pickup. Unlike those vehicles, which utilize GM’s Ultium Platform incorporating Ultium battery technology and Ultium drive technology, the next-gen Sierra will have a distinct platform.

While it’s likely that an electrified GMC Sierra pickup will be part of GM’s future lineup, the specific platform employed for the 2025 Sierra will not be the same as the one used in the GMC Hummer EV models.

2025 GMC Sierra Redesign and Refresh

The 2025 GMC Sierra showcases a bold and striking redesign that sets it apart from its predecessors. GMC has incorporated a range of aesthetic enhancements to elevate Sierra’s appearance, making it a true head-turner on the road.

From the front, the redesigned grille exudes confidence and power, while the sleek LED headlights provide exceptional visibility and a modern touch. The body lines have been carefully sculpted to enhance aerodynamics and create a strong and muscular profile. The overall result is a truck that seamlessly combines ruggedness with elegance.

Styling and Architecture

Similar to the Chevrolet Silverado EV, General Motors is committed to developing electric pickup trucks that have a distinct and recognizable design compared to their combustion-engine counterparts. The design philosophy of the Sierra EV aligns with this objective while still maintaining the recognizable GMC signature.

One notable feature is the “grille” that lifts up with the hood, providing access to the front trunk. Additionally, there is no clear separation between the body and the cabin. While this may suggest a more unibody-like structure rather than a traditional frame, it’s important to remember that the Sierra EV is built on the Ultium architecture, which entails a completely new body design. GMC assures that this new body design enhances overall solidity and durability.

Another interesting aspect is the rear design, reminiscent of the Silverado. The bed of the Sierra EV measures 5 feet 11 inches in length and can be extended to 9 feet when the wall between the cab and the bed is opened. Moreover, tilting the multi-function tailgate further increases the flat surface to a total of 11 feet.

It’s worth noting that the initial version of the Sierra EV, known as the Denali Edition 1, will only be available with a crew cab configuration.

2025 GMC Sierra

Capabilities

GMC Sierra 2025 The initial model of the Sierra EV will occupy the top position in the Sierra lineup, offering maximum capacity in various aspects. GMC prioritized maximizing range during the vehicle’s design, and they announced a range of 400 miles or 644 km, addressing customer concerns.

In terms of towing capacity, it is set at 9,500 pounds, while the payload capacity is 1,300 pounds. When it comes to the range while towing, Nichole Kraatz, the chief engineer of the Sierra EV, confirmed that the extra power required for towing loads would be equivalent to that of a gasoline model.

In other words, if a gasoline Sierra consumes 30 percent more fuel during towing, the EV variant will experience a 30 percent reduction in range for a similar towing operation. This aspect will need to be tested to validate its performance.

Regarding recharging, the Sierra EV utilizes an 800-volt architecture, enabling compatibility with 350-kilowatt charging stations, assuming they are available. With such stations, it will be possible to gain 100 miles (160 km) of range in just 10 minutes. The integrated charger in the vehicle has a capacity of 19.2 kilowatt-hours.

The Sierra EV will also feature an internal 10.2-kilowatt power system, providing the necessary power to operate appliances through multiple outlets (up to 10 outlets). Additionally, it offers a two-way interface that allows power to be sent back to the grid, making it possible to supply electricity to a home during power outages.

GMC claims that the Sierra EV could power essential household appliances for up to 21 days. This feature, similar to what we’ve seen in Ford’s offering, is quite intriguing.

GMC claims a maximum power output of 754 horsepower and 785 lb-ft of torque for the Sierra EV, achievable by selecting the Max Power driving mode. The aim here is to deliver an impressive performance, with a 0 to 97 km/h acceleration time of 4.5 seconds.

However, the actual performance may differ, as some data points are yet to be validated.

In terms of drive modes, the Sierra EV will provide a standard driving mode, a towing mode, an off-road mode, and a custom mode, offering versatility for different driving scenarios.

2025 GMC Sierra Interior

Inside the Sierra EV, the dashboard will feature a prominent 16.8-inch horizontal screen for the multimedia system, offering a unique presentation compared to the conventional vertical orientation. Additionally, an 11-inch screen replaces the traditional instrument cluster, while a 14-inch space in the windshield is reserved for the head-up display information.

The initial version of the Sierra EV will come with a comprehensive range of equipment and utilize high-quality materials. It will also include the Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving system, which now covers a considerable distance of approximately 640,000 kilometers of roads in Canada and the United States.

For enhanced comfort on long journeys, the Sierra EV will feature an adaptive air suspension. Furthermore, the vehicle can be raised or lowered by two inches as needed.

The Sierra EV will incorporate regenerative braking, enabling single-pedal driving, as well as rear-wheel steering and the crab-walking feature, previously seen in the GMC Hummer EV, which allows the vehicle to move diagonally.

However, it remains to be seen how the wheel angle will be adjusted, considering that the track width of the Sierra pickup is narrower than that of the Hummer.

Similar to Volvo’s approach, the Sierra EV can be started without the need to press any buttons. Simply putting the selector in the On position will initiate driving in traffic. Additionally, the multimedia system’s screen can display up to 14 camera angles, providing ample visibility for safe travel and maneuvering.

Further details regarding the Canadian versions of the Sierra EV are yet to be revealed, but it is expected that they will be similar, if not identical, to the model described. Additionally, GMC plans to offer two other electric variants of the Sierra EV: the Elevation and A4 versions.

2025 GMC Sierra

Technology

Step inside the 2025 GMC Sierra, and you’ll find a refined and luxurious cabin that prioritizes comfort and convenience. The interior has been meticulously designed with high-quality materials and meticulous attention to detail.

Plush seating upholstered in premium leather ensures a comfortable ride for both the driver and passengers, even during long journeys. The Sierra’s spacious cabin offers ample legroom and headroom, providing a truly enjoyable experience.

In terms of technology, GMC has equipped the 2025 Sierra with an array of cutting-edge features. The centerpiece of the dashboard is a user-friendly infotainment system displayed on a large touchscreen.

This system integrates seamlessly with smartphones, offering enhanced connectivity and access to various entertainment and navigation options. Additionally, advanced driver-assistance systems provide additional safety and convenience, making the Sierra a reliable companion on the road.

2025 GMC Sierra EV

During a recent trip to the Detroit area at the invitation of GM, we had the opportunity to attend a preview presentation of the GMC Sierra EV. We were expecting something new, and that’s exactly what we got. However, there was a twist that surprised us, something we rarely encounter despite our extensive experience in the industry.

The GMC Sierra EV is the electric version of GMC’s pickup truck, designed to compete with rivals such as the Chevy Silverado EV and Ford’s F-150 Lightning, which is already available on the market.

This type of preview presentation isn’t uncommon, as it often takes place about 18 months before the model is officially launched. It’s also typical for us to be under an embargo preventing us from reporting on the Sierra EV until a specific date.

Next-Gen Power

The 2024 Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 achieves a GM-estimated driving range of 400 miles on a full charge thanks to its Ultium battery pack. This battery pack not only powers the vehicle but also serves as a structural component, enhancing the overall strength, durability, and performance of the truck.

This off-board power capability means that, with the right setup including a bi-directional charger and additional products and services from GM Energy’s Ultium Home line, the Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 can power essential home necessities for up to 21 days in total.

In terms of charging, the 2024 Sierra EV Denali includes a 19.2kW onboard AC charging module for home and public charging. It also supports 800V DC Public Fast Charging with a capability of up to 350kW, allowing for the addition of approximately 100 miles of range in just 10 minutes.
